Just before the monsoon really starts people all over Nepal start to plant rice and Nepal is lush in green. The Hills are green. Fields are green. Entire Nepal is green. The Monsoon is the greenest time of the year in Nepal. The Newar farmers of the Kathmandu Valley are supposed to complete the planting of the rice before the Ghantakarna festival which starts exactly on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of Shrawan (June-July). Planting of the rice rougly takes arround seven weeks. On the pictures you see 4 sisters of one newar family from harisiddhi working on the fields. During the brakes they and drink some raksi. Besides working hard they also have fun. And they help eachother out. Rice planting is not big business for small farmers. The costs are hardly earned back. But as they say what tastes better then eating dahl bhat (the local food) with your own grown rice. Newar Farmers who cannot get their work done before the deadline of the 14th day of the darkfortnight are not supposed to take part in Ghantakarna festival at all.

Adventure golf at its truest, the course’s includes some of the most visually dynamic holes known to golf. Himalayan Golf Course has certainly been very successful in putting Pokhara in the golfer's map. The course was designed and constructed by an Ex British Army Sandhurst commissioned officer Major Ram Gurung MBE , and opened for play in January 1998. The course has been the venue for the Nepal Surya Western (professional) Open for the past seven years.

Located just seven kms. away from downtown Pokhara, the twice played 9 hole course is well laid out for championships at 6,900 yards with a par of 73. It has 11 greens and different tee positions and lies for the most part inside a sweeping canyon created by the Himalayan snowed waters of the Bijayapur river.

Framed by the towering the Annapurna range, cattle and buffalo roam freely providing most of the grass mowing.

The course wanders through aerial cliff drops of hundreds of feet down to the signature island hole within the either tranquil or raging Bijayapur river, full of exposed boulders washed down over centuries from the towering mountains above.

Play on the 1st and 2nd holes at the HGC Pokhara's inaugural course is fairly straightforward as these par 4's are laid out on relatively level ground on each side of the clubhouse.

Your baptism to the truly unique character of this course comes when you step up to the 3rd tee to be confronted with a flawless panorama which encompasses the magnificent Fishtail and Annapurna mountain range. Below your elevated tee you see and hear the meandering Bijayapur Himalayan river some 300 feet below, sheer canyon walls dotted with eagle's nests, waterfalls which burst into life during the monsoon and a barely perceptible flag. Some 300 yards distant and 90 feet below, this small triangular piece of fabric marks the place where your ball should end up after only four strokes.

There is no other experience that duplicates or even comes close to the thrill of teeing off on the 3rd. However this takes nothing away from the sensation of successfully landing your ball on the 5th green, which is known to be the only natural river island hole in the world and recently nominated by leading golf course architects as one of the most unique hole in the World
Watching the pros victoriously blasting their second shot to the par five, 7th green in the middle of Bijayapur river, leaves one in fascinated awe.

I played a round at the famed Himalayan Golf Club in April 2009. I've played many courses and this one ranks right up there among the more unique.

Finding my way there from Lakeside was relatively simple. The route is well sign-posted all the way to the course (look out for the black and yellow golfer logo). I was met by the friendly pro who helped me to a set of clubs and some balls. The$45 includes 18holes green fee, clubs hire and a caddy. New balls cost Rs 200. I highly recommend hiring a ball spotter for Rs 250. Apart from their obvious duty, they have excellent course knowledge and help pick out the correct line of play.

The course lies in a gorge with lots of risk/reward holes on offer. You are called to carry the river several times from elevated tee boxes while missing the green on some holes means your ball ends up in the gorge or the river.

The signature hole (holes 4 and 10) is the island green which splits the river and can be seen on the club's website. Other unique features include cows keeping the fairways trimmed and eagles soaring overhead.

The only criticism I can add is shabby state of the tee boxes and greens. Having said that the climate is harsh and the clubs recourses to maintain the course are severely limited.

I had a great day out and the friendly staff more than compensated for the course's short-comings. A must for keen golfers!!

After cycling for 2 kilometers turn left and continue straight on (north). This intersection is the Zero kilometer road marker for the road leading to Sarangkot. After a farther 2 kilometers there is a smaller sealed road to the left which leads to Sarangkot. As you cycle along this road you can see outstanding views of the Himalaya. After a 6 kilometers ride, there are a few tea shops where you could stop and have refreshments. Here are also the stone steps that lead to the summit.

Sarangkot is situated at the northern end of Phewa Lake, at an elevation if 1593m. You can get a breathtaking view of the Pokhara Valley, the Annapurna range and the Phewa Lake and its tributaries from Sarangkot. From left to right, you can get a glimpse of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhare, Annapurna III, IV and II and Lamjung Himal. You can also go to the remains of an old fort (kot) on top of a ridge by walking for a few minutes.

There are various routes to reach Sarangot. The 2 hour walk from Bindya Basini temple is the easiest. To reach Sarangot from the temple, you have to head west and follow bitumen road. The route from Lakeside is rather confusing and takes 3 to 4 hours. Another alternative is the route from Bhairab Tole in the northern part of Pokhara bazaar via the village of Gyarajati. You can also go to Sarangkot in a motorbike or a taxi and Rs 700 ($ 10) for a taxi from Lakeside to Sarangkot is a reasonable bargain. From the taxi stop, you will have to walk for about 30 minutes to reach the viewpoint.

There are good budget hotels ($1 to $3) and restaurants in Sarangkot near Pokhara. If you want to catch a magical sunrise or sunset view, you can climb up in the evening and stay overnight. This is also the place to take off paragliding and parahawking activities.

Biking to Sarangkot in Pokhara

Ride along the Lakeside (towards the mountains) to the last intersection and sealed road. Turn right and follow the way that returns to Central Pokhara and after riding for 2 kilometers turn left and continue to the north. After further 2 kilometers, there is a small sealed road to the left signposted as the road to Sarangkot. After 6 kilometers, there are a few tea shops and from this point the road ahead is the 4WD track. Continue until you reach the Y intersection and the right turning takes you to the Sarangkot point.

From Sarangkot, take the road straight ahead via Kaski to Naudanda. The Kaski section takes half an hour to an hour. From the top of Kaski, you will follow the trial to Naudanda which is at an altitude of 1590 meters, a gain of 840 meters from Pokhara. The road from Pokhara to Naudanda is around 22 kilometers long and an uphill route.

From Naudanda, it is 6 kilometer downhill to Mardi Khola and a gentle slope to Pokhara. The road is the smooth asphalt highway to Pokhara. You will see the excellent views of the Himalayas from the route. The total length of the route is 54 kilometers and takes around 7 hours to complete.

Population	About 170,000 thousand. It is believed that Pokhara was the city of Mallas, the rulers of Nepal about 250 years ago. The "must do" mountain according to the locals. The usual way is to take a vehicle to the far end of the mountain, then follow the obvious road / track to the summit - it takes about 4 hours and to be fair I reckon it's fairly pointless! - the track stays on the south side of the mountain so you are hidden from all the great views of the Himalayas but in recompense you do get good views over Pokhara's lake - I personally would recommend the Peace Temple route instead if it's views of The Himalaya that you're after.

At the end of the track, climb the steps to reach the summit viewpoint - a fairly neglected lookout platform which obviously once had a really nice garden laid out around it but has been left to overgrow. Here you will be encouraged to make a donation to the local village but it's not an entrance fee so you can give what you want. The walk itself is an easy going legstretcher and probably a good way to warm up before hitting the major trekking routes.

Whilst walking along you are likely to be approached by locals who offer you various bits of information about the area - the info is usually worth listening to but, of course, there's a catch - the bags they are carrying are full of potential souvenirs which they will offer to you as soon as you stop - the more information they have imparted to you then the more persistent they will be to sell something - or the higher the starting price!

Boats can be hired at various places along lakeside. This is certainly one of the better, more relaxed itineraries available. Boat hire prices are usually fixed; look out for the large boards at the landing areas near the royal house or at Mike's Place.

Boats are of varying quality - so check you don’t get a leaking one. Best bet is to take a picnic, row out and let yourself drift for a while. There's a temple in the middle of the lake that’s worth a quick stop - usually surrounded by hundreds of fish.

No motor boats are allowed on the lake so you are guaranteed quiet time.

The Temple in the middle of the lake has special importance. As legend has it, a beggar arrived in Pokhara and asked for help from the townsfolk; all but one family refused to help and the beggar turned out to be one of the gods testing his subjects. The one generous family were then told to leave town for a few days - when they returned they found that the town had been swamped by the river and so the family built the temple as a blessing for their lives that were spared.

A fairly recent addition to the skyline - the Peace temple sits on the hills to the Western side of Phewa Tal (Pokhara's lake). We made this a morning trip out, starting by getting rowed over the lake - picking up boats at lakeside (180rp per boat for the ten minute trip). Then we climbed the steps up to the temple. The route is fairly obvious but keep an eye out for the painted marks which indicate the route at junctions. On the way up beware of leeches that await your arrival - there are not many of them but if a leech gets its teeth into you, don’t pull it off. Instead, sprinkle some salt on it, and it will fall off instantly.

The temple itself is a huge white dome which is blinding in the sunlight. On each of the four faces is a Buddha, each donated by a different country, including Thailand - a smaller copy of the reclining Buddha found in Bangkok.

Just below the entrance to the temple are a couple of cafés which are well worth the visit to sit back and admire the views of the Himalayas.

Annapurna Range from pokhara

The most spectacular sight in Pokhara is the sight of Annapurna range. See the following image which shows eight important mountains of the Annapurna range.

This range stretching from west to east includes Dhaulagiri, South Annapurna, Annapurna 1, Hiunchuli, Fish-tail (Machapuchare), Annapurna 3, Annapurna 4, and Annapurna 2.
